These events represent only a few of the hundreds of gatherings and commemorations that have occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/WJoUTEbsfd6YS_kh5Z0HTlAkvuhANTsbwku2hWbrCgr9tVC_zu-Kgt1CVxqcMNOgXky-RfAg9bEeWttGdOoZzNqeCH-POTd19R7dK5DGg7v0WFBCoVX3kjYS_-bTXcEld1Ff8_OB\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:526px;height:295px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Qamishlo, Syria, International Women\u2019s Day 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/kongra-star-the-womens-congress\/\">Kongra Star<\/a> hosted a significant festival of art and cultural expression in the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/cities\/qamishlo\/\">Qamishlo<\/a> to Mark the occasion of International Women\u2019s Day. Thousands of women participated in the event in traditional regional clothing. The event was intended to express solidarity with all women of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/fXIpAZtvF4gPqdwF50pgrO-lRKDu_94wUnNUnRAJO5Y3v2ggqjzgb_Xb_FZkVrdJ8vWcHibaEf76uKUInz_Jxc0XzYXVba3C49JaIPvPFzToL55XH81Nsyu1fBNuzS-CMid9KTV1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hasakah, Syria, International Women\u2019s Day 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two conferences were held in <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/cities\/hasakah\/\">Hasakah<\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/cities\/derbesiye%e2%80%8e\/\">Darbasiya<\/a> on violence against women. Presentations at the conferences focused on political violence against women, which prevents women from entering public life, participating in public affairs, and seeking political office. These events were hosted by the Women\u2019s Councils of the two cities and were attended by officials of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) as well as advocates and intellectuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/tTRg6kOYNho7Vy39zijXEi_-Appzjtjp-r1yEyxL6pLm2kGDMmdm3o6T_ZL7LeR5UC-OPm_tBLPb0btbQG9ozn1PnKGhiI1ctQ66fsKfMmaK4XhgbumhA4t-XPoAuN9-XVrRz2l5\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amina Omar, co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syrian women make their own history, said Amina Omar, co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council. Omar said that history was not fair to the struggle of Syrian women, starting with the Ottoman occupation and ending with the Ba\u2019ath Party\u2019s rule. She called on all women to join hands and write the history of women\u2019s struggles, continuing through to today\u2019s revolution in North and East Syria, which is on the vanguard of women\u2019s liberation movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/yxPiu3UrgL3713dsSnC7Sv3hAkG2ce7oqnw-_YuuwKF5hHi5DuLu_yRpr5d5LiuWOe45_svTaqR9wyXnqRyFR2V0mpxqXcrgzZmDkJoy8C4FxZwFCTAUvtfVH02FEwmHT11a3Gsy\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jinwar, Syria, International Women\u2019s Day 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a commemoration of International Women\u2019s Day in <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/coops\/jinwar\/\">Jinwar<\/a>, the all-women\u2019s village built by and for women. The mother of <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/tag\/hevrin-xelef\/\">Hevrin Khalaf<\/a>, a Kurdish woman politician who was murdered by Turkish-backed militia members as part of the October 2019 Turkish military invasion into North and East Syria, was present at the event and shared a few words of resistance with the attendees. Khalaf has become a symbol of martyrdom for women in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/KZOcmhwHYpcWzsggY4h-8dfWQj9jzB0M5IDXKS1sPr0VvkhJrG6uImFgVE5MJRpgB28FrTTwGr5jCKePi01JqVbNmyDj7brBj76caW7o5mQxW1VlJ3dFj9yYYmsI-8PW7LBhPA89\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:468px;height:311px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Women\u2019s Protection Unit (YPJ) soldiers, North and East Syria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A festival in <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/cities\/rimelan\/\">Ramelan<\/a> took place in order to celebrate women and especially the Women\u2019s Protection Units (YPJ) of the Syrian Democratic Forces for International Women\u2019s Day. Tribute was paid to the YPJ soldiers, and the soldiers participated in music and dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_zDey_1SdkNsnU25w-BlUEyJPjjc3bCp5c8cZ-ZrwIWWyVfbsG7kPHaX6ANBYGYhKqk-442JBOvJKpwvVvyrpkYFsT1njbNLLAyj1QXdkQWpPZyxzhY2jfQQGilnD_aRpEIIBXJP\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, International Women\u2019s Day 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conference was hosted by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria to commemorate International Women\u2019s Day.
