{"id":5365,"date":"2019-08-12T16:17:56","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T15:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/?p=5365"},"modified":"2025-09-26T13:59:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T12:59:06","slug":"turkey-flooding-hasankeyf-town-with-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/turkey-flooding-hasankeyf-town-with-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey flooding Hasankeyf town with water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turkey has started filling a huge hydroelectric dam on the Tigris River, a lawmaker and activists said, despite protests that it will displace thousands of people, the rising waters of the dam are also expected to eventually submerge the 12,000-year-old town of <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/cities\/hasankeyf\/\">Hasankeyf<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citing satellite images, they said that <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/category\/water\/\">water<\/a> was starting to build up behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/tag\/Ilisu-Dam\/\">Ilisu dam<\/a>, a project that has been decades in the making and which aims to generate 1,200 megawatts of electricity for southeast Turkey.<br>Satellite images from the past two weeks show the dam has started holding water, said Necdet Ipekyuz, a lawmaker from Turkey\u2019s pro-Kurdish Peoples\u2019 Democratic Party (HDP). He said a road in the area has already been submerged. \u201cThey are taking steps slowly to decrease the reactions to water being held. That is why they are not informing the public,\u201d he said, adding that several HDP lawmakers tried to visit the dam in July but were prevented by police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental campaigners have unsuccessfully challenged the dam project at the European Court of Human Rights on the grounds it would damage the country\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Submerged town<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mesopotamia.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/114907_turkey.hasankeyf.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5367\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hasankeyf<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rising waters of the dam are also expected to eventually submerge the 12,000-year-old town of Hasankeyf.
